What is PROZAC?

Prozac, with generic name Fluoxetine, is an antidepressant drug that is is used medically in the treatment of depression, body dysmorphic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, prementrual dysphoric disorder, hypochondriasis and panic disorder.

Directions:

In tablet form, the medicine is to be taken orally with a full glass of water. There is no need to split, chew or crush the tablet.  In liquid form, the bottle of medicine should be shaken well before each use.  The doctor may start you on a low dose of fluoxetine and gradually increase.

Storage:

  • Keep it in its tightly closed container. Keep it out of reach of children.
  • Store the capsules and tablets at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
  • Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

Warning:

Before taking Fluoxetine, advice your Doctor and Pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to fluoxetine or any other medications. Do not take fluoxetine if you are taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors or have stopped taking them within the past 2 weeks. Do not take fluoxetine with thioridazine (Mellaril).
  • If you are taking prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products.
  • If you or anyone in your family has or has ever had depression, bipolar disorder (mood that changes from depressed to abnormally excited), mania
    (frenzied, abnormally excited mood)
  • If you or anyone in your family has thought about or attempted suicide.
  • If you have recently had a heart attack, diabetes, seizures, and liver or heart disease.
  • If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
  • If you become pregnant while on medication with fluoxetine, immediately consult your doctor.
